Cardinal George Parnell and Bishop Andrew Fisher have been named as the new leaders of the Australian Church, replacing Cardinal George Fisher and Bishop John Mcutcheon.
The move comes just weeks after former Australian Catholic Bishop Andrew Whitford, who had been the leader of the Anglican Church of Australia, resigned from the Australian Diocese after his appointment as the Archbishop of Melbourne.
Cardinal Pell said in a statement the announcement was “a tribute to the service of the people of Australia in their service to God”.
“It is with deep humility that I am announcing the retirement of the two men who have served our Church and to the faith,” he said.
“These are not easy decisions to make and I accept full responsibility for them.”AAP/ABC
