A former goalkeeper is suing Juventus over the use of a deflated referee’s whistle on the final whistle of a Serie A game, arguing it was “inappropriate” and “unprofessional”.

Juventus’ Paolo Maldini was sent off in the 2-1 win over Lazio in April, with referee Mario Maggio declaring him guilty of a “violation of the law” of the game.

Maldini said he had been sent off for a second foul, which the referee ruled was “unlawful” but he was later dismissed for failing to show the yellow card.

The 26-year-old is also suing the Italian FA, who have said they have no plans to challenge the decision.

Malfini, who has a history of alleged infractions, says he was “scolded and reprimanded” by Maggio for his decision, but is seeking compensation for his lost wages, lost prize money and medical expenses.

The case was first reported by Tuttosport.
