Greek Orthodox priest Bishop Griesa Bosse of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Toronto died Saturday, according to a statement from the Greek Patriarchate of Toronto.
Bosse, 72, was a leader in the Greek Archdiocesan Priesthood and a longtime advocate of the priesthood for gays and lesbians, according the statement.
His death comes less than two weeks after a video was released showing him being arrested and assaulted by police while attempting to arrest a suspect in the shooting death of a gay man.
A vigil for Bosse was held in his honor at St. Catherine’s Cathedral on Friday.
Bosselas death has also drawn international attention, with Pope Francis visiting him in Greece this month and a Greek priest, Father Georgios Konstantinou, speaking out in support of his death.
The bishop was a prominent voice in the fight for marriage equality in Greece, a country where homosexuality is illegal and a crime punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
